‘Hat,’ With Chris Rock, Extends Its Broadway Run

Call your sponsor, hide your distinguishing headwear and find yourself a spot on Cousin Julio’s couch: “The ___________ With the Hat” is extending its run on Broadway. Press representatives for that Stephen Adly Guirgis play, about the intertwined lives of a former drug dealer struggling with sobriety, his girlfriend, his cousin, his sponsor and the sponsor’s wife, said that it will play at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theater through July 17; it was previously scheduled to end its run on June 25.

"To tell you the truth, I just assumed they would change the title," says Chris Rock. "I didn't think it would get this far."

That's because the show that is bringing Rock to Broadway — after 20 years of performing stand-up on stages large and small — has a title that is kind of unprintable. On the radio, we had to use a bleep. For the Web, we'll go with The Motherf——- with the Hat.

It's a five-person ensemble show that deals with addiction, friendship and betrayal in New York City — not a frothy comedy, by any stretch.

"I always look for everything," says the comedian, sitting at a table at the theater-district hangout Sardi's before rehearsals of his new gritty play by Stephen Adly Guirgis.

Chris Rock on the Play for Everybody

In a recent interview with Broadway Beat, comedian Chris Rock went on the record about making his Broadway debut in the new play THE MOTHER FU**KER WITH THE HAT. Rock told Broadway Beat, "I just like this play so much. I like the fact that sometimes Broadway can be a little over the average man's head, but this play is for evrybody. It works on so many levels. It's like the kinda play that could work at the Apollo or the Met. That's what I like to do with my stand up- have an act that works for everybody, and this play gets them all."
