Chris Rock, Putting On A Blue New 'Hat'

"To tell you the truth, I just assumed they would change the title," says Chris Rock. "I didn't think it would get this far."

That's because the show that is bringing Rock to Broadway — after 20 years of performing stand-up on stages large and small — has a title that is kind of unprintable. On the radio, we had to use a bleep. For the Web, we'll go with The Motherf——- with the Hat.

It's a five-person ensemble show that deals with addiction, friendship and betrayal in New York City — not a frothy comedy, by any stretch.

Chris Rock tries on a new hat: Star of a Broadway production

NEW YORK — The title of the new Broadway play that marks comedian and actor Chris Rock's theatrical debut hardly suggests family entertainment.

Yet Rock's desire to spend more time with his family was a big factor in his decision to take on The Mother —————— With the Hat, which begins previews March 15.

Chris Rock Adds Broadway to His Funny Resume

How do you top a winter in which you've made fun of Oprah Winfrey to her face, gleefully butchered a classic Simon and Garfunkel song during a telethon and made a guest appearance on Kanye West's mega-selling CD?

If you're Chris Rock, the next stop is Broadway.

"I always look for everything," says the comedian, sitting at a table at the theater-district hangout Sardi's before rehearsals of his new gritty play by Stephen Adly Guirgis.

Chris Rock on the Play for Everybody

In a recent interview with Broadway Beat, comedian Chris Rock went on the record about making his Broadway debut in the new play THE MOTHER FU**KER WITH THE HAT. Rock told Broadway Beat, "I just like this play so much. I like the fact that sometimes Broadway can be a little over the average man's head, but this play is for evrybody. It works on so many levels. It's like the kinda play that could work at the Apollo or the Met. That's what I like to do with my stand up- have an act that works for everybody, and this play gets them all."

Chris Rock rolls to Broadway debut

Chris Rock has locked in a Broadway run in "The Motherfucker With the Hat," a play by Stephen Adly Guirgis set to premiere at the Schoenfeld Theater in April.

Anna D. Shapiro ("August: Osage County") directs a cast that includes Bobby Cannavale, Annabella Sciorra, Yul Vazquez and Elizabeth Rodriguez.

Scott Rudin, the Public Theater, Labyrinth Theater Company and Stuart Thompson produce. Play was originally announced as part of the Public Theater season and had been assumed to be headed for one of the Public's Off Broadway stages.
